Back to the Basics: Teaching Children Cybersecurity Fundamentals

August 9, 2022
As technology becomes more accessible, the average age children are utilizing a device continues to get younger and younger. Being constantly connected to the internet has become so routine, and has evolved so quickly, the focus on online safety can often be overlooked, especially among children who are growing up in an existence where not being connected is unimaginable.

Especially among internet-savvy children, the natural ease of integrating technology so seamlessly should not be confused with an intrinsic understanding of how to also safely use it. Just like we teach our children road safety after learning to ride a bike in order to put that new skill into everyday practice, a child who has learned to use technology needs to learn online safety in order to put these skills into everyday practice. As such, it is always a good idea to teach, and brush up on, basic safety tips.

Parental Control Settings: Simply turning on parental control settings cannot safeguard children from becoming victims of online scams, such as phishing. Discuss the importance of avoiding sharing any type of personal information through online chats, emails, DMs, etc., which parental controls have limitations on.

Setting Personal Boundaries: Younger generations are growing up in an era that openly shares so much of their lives online. For children, establishing how much is appropriate to share online is essential for safety reasons, especially with any potential strangers they may come across online.

Password Safety: We have all been reminded, over and over, the importance of safeguarding our passwords, but this message may not have been delivered and stressed as greatly with our children. Especially because so many households have shared, family devices that contain stored credit card and financial information, any compromised passwords can have lasting consequences.
