Steps to Take After A Data Breach

Many Consumers Unaware of What Steps to Take After a Data Breach

March 9, 2022
A high number of consumers have received an email or alert from various companies notifying them of a possible data breach but are left wondering what actions to take afterwards. The steps you take immediately following a data breach can make the difference in ensuring your sensitive information is protected and prevent your identity and financial information from being stolen.

If you have questions about the breach, the company will post information about the incident(s) on their website but remember, when verifying your exposure, never include personal information in an email, form or website that is not an official breach check site. Once you determine you have been part of a data breach, follow the steps, as instructed by the company that has been breached, to find out what compensation you may be entitled to as well as what protections have been put into place. Again, make sure any notifications you receive are from the verified company and avoid clicking on links or fake representations of the breached company.

Immediately change your password on the site that was breached and be advised of any other security instructions the company issues. If any of your financial information, like credit or debit cards, were stolen from the site, immediately notify your bank or credit union and freeze them while you continue to closely monitor them for unusual activity. If you know your cards were breached, immediately cancel the cards.
