Five Holiday “Potpourri” End of Year Security Tips and Refreshers

December 21, 2023
  1. For iPhone users: Stolen Device Protection was just announced to protect users from a thief potentially accessing their data if their device is lost or stolen. Choose to opt-in when iOS 17.3 launches, if interested.

  1. Update your passwords. The end of the year can be a great time to clean house, including updating your passwords to strengthen your security. Keep your passwords in order by utilizing a password manager.

  1. Setup or choose to opt-in to two-factor authentication whenever possible. While it can feel like an extra step (or more in multi-factor), the extra step(s) can help you avoid identity, data or monetary theft and loss.

  1. Many large businesses and corporations utilize Zero Trust, which requires verification for every user and device that tries to access an online account, but consumers can also implement the practice to significantly beef up their security. If Zero Trust is employed, even if a password is breached, a hacker will still need a second form of authentication, adding another layer of digital protection.

  1. Avoid storing your credit card with retailers for future purchases. This tip can not only save your security from being breached but maybe even a few dollars. The convenience of storing a credit card in your online shopping account, especially if used often, can be a timesaver, but if a hacker accesses your password, your credit card information doesn’t even need to entered to make purchases.
