Holiday Deal or Steal…FBI Warns Shoppers of Holiday Scams

December 8, 2022
'Tis the season for the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping and searching for deep discounts, but the FBI is reminding shoppers to be wary of deals that seem too good to be true. There are two types of scams that the FBI identifies called non-delivery scams and non-payment scams. In a non-delivery scam, a consumer pays for an online transaction but never receive the items, and in a non-payment scam the shipment of items or services is fulfilled but the seller never receives payment.

The FBI cautions consumers to:
  • Avoid clicking on any suspicious links or opening attachments that can divulge your personal information or that will automatically download malware to your device.
  • Make sure any requested password update is legitimate.
  • Do your due diligence if making purchases from a company you have never purchased or heard of by reading online reviews.
  • Merchants with a lot of negative reviews and unfavorable comments may be a sign of illegitimacy and consumers should exercise caution.
  • Never wire money directly to a merchant.
  • Make online purchases using a credit card that you regularly monitor and can alert the credit card company if suspicious activity arises.
  • Obtain the shipping information, so you can monitor and track the fulfillment process.
