How to Spot Fake Bank Calls and Texts

Scammers are becoming increasingly convincing pretending to be your bank and other financial institutions. You may receive a text warning that your debit card has been locked or a phone call claiming there's suspicious activity on your account. Their goal is to create a sense of urgency, so you'll act before you have time to think it over.

A legitimate bank may contact you about potential fraud, but will never ask you to provide your online banking password, your debit card PIN, or a one-time verification code sent to your phone or email. If someone asks for this information, it's a scam.

The safest response is simple: don't click links in unexpected text messages or rely on the phone number provided by the caller. Instead, end the conversation and contact your bank directly using the number on the back of your debit or credit card or by visiting the bank's official website.

A few simple habits can significantly reduce your risk:

  • Be cautious of messages that pressure you to act immediately
  • Never share passwords, PINs, or one-time verification codes
  • Review your account activity regularly and report unfamiliar transactions promptly
  • Enable multi-factor authentication whenever it's available for your online banking account

Scammers rely on fear and urgency. Taking a moment to verify who you're communicating with is one of the most effective ways to protect your finances and personal information. When in doubt, contact the bank or institution directly through a trusted phone number or website.
