Many Consumers Becoming Desensitized to Data Breaches

May 2, 2023
Receiving an email or notification about a data breach used to illicit strong consumer responses due to concerns about their security being compromised, however, data breaches have become so frequent that some experts worry many consumers have now become desensitized to the news. As a result, consumers may not be holding the companies who experience the data breaches accountable for failing to protect their personal data as strongly as they should or taking the necessary steps to prevent further repeat instances from occurring.

While companies need to be implementing, and maintaining, proactive cybersecurity initiatives, there are steps consumers can take, should they be notified their personal data has been compromised, to better ensure their information is safeguarded.
  • Immediately update your password(s), using multi-factor authentication when possible.
  • Setup a password manager to allow unique passwords, especially if the breached password is being used for other logins (which is often the case).
  • Check your credit report to verify unauthorized accounts have not been opened in your name.
  • Freeze your credit to prevent an account being opened up in your name.
  • Regularly review your account activity to check for unauthorized or suspicious activity.
  • Report the data breaches to the Better Business Bureau, the Federal Trade Commission or the Federal Communications Commission, depending on the type of breach, and help to hold the companies accountable.
