Password Mistakes to Stop Making —Especially If You’re Over 55

June 01, 2026

Passwords still protect most of our financial and personal information—but many people continue to rely on unsafe habits. Over one-third of consumers write passwords down on paper, and 32% reuse the same password across multiple accounts. These shortcuts make it easier to remember passwords, but it makes it much easier for scams to happen.

Worried about remembering your passwords without writing them down? Here are easy to implement ways to protect yourself:

1. Use strong but simple passphrases
Instead of one word, use a short sentence that is easy to remember but much more difficult to guess.

2. Don’t reuse passwords
If someone steals a password from one website, they can try it on others. Make sure each online account, especially essential and sensitive ones like your email, bank, financial accounts, unique.

3. Try a password manager
If remembering your passwords prove difficult, password managers store passwords securely and create strong ones for you. If you’ve never tried a password manager, try it out with just one or two to see how they work, and once you gain familiarity, move to more accounts.

4. Avoid keeping passwords on paper or in unprotected notes
If someone finds your list, they have access to everything. If you must write them down, keep the list somewhere safe - not near your computer, or like too many make the mistake of doing, on a sticky note directly on/under your computer.
