Ransomware Attacks Continue to Increase

Ransomware is currently one of the most common types of cyberattacks, which saw a significant spike in global incidents during 2021. As hackers become more sophisticated, warnings are being issued to ramp of vigilance and education about the ways individuals and companies can protect themselves against this ongoing threat.

A type of malware that encrypts your data, ransomware will lock users out of their data and applications, requiring a payment in order to unlock it and regain access to their files. To best protect and prevent a ransomware attack from occurring, there are things that you can do to avoid falling victim.
  • Regularly update your antivirus software.
  • Install security software designed to protect your device from ransomware attacks.
  • Frequently update and change your passwords, avoiding reusing the same password for multiple logins.
  • Create passwords utilizing the maximum amount of characters, including a combination of upper and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols.
  • Protect your unique passwords, taking care not to share them or write them down, in order to best avoid sensitive information from being compromised.
  • Avoid opening emails, and especially attachments, from unknown senders and contact the individual or company directly to confirm the validity if it appears legitimate.
  • Routinely backup your files to ensure your data has been stored should it become encrypted by ransomware.
