Remaining Mindful of Child Safety When Sharing Posts Between “Friends”
Remaining Mindful of Child Safety When Sharing Posts Between “Friends”
September 6, 2022
Social media has given many parents the ability to easily keep friends and family updated with their children’s lives. While a post can be a quick way to give a glimpse into what’s going on, it is important to remain mindful that you may not actually know all your online “friends.” Posting personal information about your children, including their names, hobbies and activities, and frequented locations can compromise their safety. Seemingly small details give a stranger a way to establish familiarity with a child that would otherwise not be as accessible, as well as their locations, often in real-time. Some ways to keep your friends and family updated while also protecting your children’s safety are:
Disable locations when posting
Avoid sharing specific, identifying information about your child
Create specific, more personal groups with just your trusted, family and friends if sharing in greater detail
Consider limiting the number of posts including your children
