White House Launches U.S. Cyber Trust Mark Program

July 24, 2023
The White House announced a partnership with major retailers in response to consumer concerns and company feedback wary of the persistent, and growing, instances of cyberattacks on smart devices.

Called the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark program, the Biden administration aims to improve cybersecurity on smart products, including smart TVs, fitness trackers, smart washing machines, and heating and AC control systems, Americans use regularly on a daily basis.

The program is slated to be launched by 2024, according to the White House, and officials are currently designing a new logo that will be placed on electronics that meet cybersecurity standards as established by the National Institutes of Standards and Technology. The standards will include requiring strong and unique default passwords, data protection, and software updates, and hopes to provide more reassurance to American consumers that their information is being protected.

Early voluntary commitments from retailers and manufacturers so far include brands like Amazon, Best Buy, Google, LG Electronics U.S.A., Logitech and Samsung Electronics.
